Learn to Sew Workshop Sessions

BEGINNERS LEARN TO SEW SERIES

During this 4-day workshop participants will learn basic machine sewing skills and make a drawstring bag.  Participants are encouraged to bring their own sewing machine, fabric shears, and basic tools/supplies that came with your machine. All other materials are supplied.  Each session is 3 hours. 

Nitty Gritty:  The Sewing Machine 

During this workshop participants will learn about the basic components of the sewing machine, including  examining their own machine. Participants will also learn how to thread their machine and wind the bobbin, including talking about tension and troubleshooting. 

Activity:  Draw string bag

Nitty Gritty: The Sewing Pattern

Sewing from a pattern need not be intimidating.  This workshop teaches participants how to read commercial sewing patterns-both modern-day patterns and vintage.  Participants will also view some of the vintage sewing patterns in the instructor's vast collection. 

Nitty Gritty Session:  Selecting and Buying Fabric

During this workshop participants will learn how to select, measure and cut fabric-in addition to learning about grain and bias.  We'll also look at some online fabric sources. 

Nitty Gritty Session:  Get stitching

Building upon the other sessions participants will make a simple beret.

INTERMEDIATE LEARN TO SEW SERIES

This workshop delves deeper into laying out patterns, cutting fabric, marking fabric and constructing, including seaming and finishing.
