A548 Mr. Blackwell

Mr. Richard Blackwell , yes the same Mr. Blackwell that issued the infamous "Worst Dress List" every January--or after the Hollywood Academy Awards show. Before that--he was a fashion designer. The House of Blackwell folded during the early 80s, but had its beginnings in the 1950s, but is responsible for many of the classic fashions American women wore of the day. He brought "Dior" elegance to the everyday woman.

CHANELISMS

THE LITTLE BLACK DRESS

One of the enduring elements of the simple little black “nothing”, always perfect in black silk crepe, is its ability to transform from nothing to something.

She’s perfect for all shapes and sizes, always elegant and never ever out of style. She can never be new again, because she never gets old. The “little black” is eternal.

During this workshop we’re constructing McCalls 6353, styling her up our way-maybe with an imitation gardenia, Chanel’s favorite. But, for certain we’re making our own pendant to bling her out; adding a touch of stylish vintage elegance.

As a topper, and in fulfilling our millinery endeavors, we’re making a silky turban—that’s sure to turn heads.

THE Gabby: VINTAGE FRENCH COUTURE JACKET & Printed blouse

In this workshop participants use a vintage sewing pattern as the muse for working up their own version of the jacket CoCo Chanel made famous.

Susan Khalje's French Jacket

In this workshop participants use Miss Khalje's pattern and video series as our muse.

THE PRINTED BLOUSE

The printed blouse is iconic, especially under the "Chanel" jacket lined in the same fabric.

In 1957 or so, Chanel glorified the shirt which is a logical accompaniment for many suits. It also does well on its own as a companion for the slim skirts that so many ladies like or a sleek pair of pants.

In this workshop participants will make a muslin and blouse of silk, cotton or chiffon in addition to making Chanel-like beads and vintage costume jewelry to adorn the shirt and make it alluring.

Wiggle while you walk:  THE PENCIL SKIRT

Couture Designer, Christian Dior set the world abuzz in 1954 when he introduced the “pencil skirt” from his H-Line collection.  Since then the pencil skirt has become a closet staple with its hemline raising or lowering depending on the trends of the day and season.

In this workshop participants mockup up a pencil skirt and make a paper pattern from their draping.

Bring pins, 2 yards of muslin, fabric shears, clear ruler and tape measure.

This is a #fashiondraping workshop.

SOPHISTICATED LADY SERIES: HATS

This workshop attempts to bring millinery back!

Hats help make women beautiful by lifting her spirits, framing her face and highlighting her personality.  It’s not the price of the hat that counts, it’s the style that counts.

In this workshop we'll make a hat from a vintage sewing pattern.
